Obverse of first and reverse of second only illustrated. Cecil Herbert Edward Chubb, 1st Bt (1876-1934), b. Shrewton, Wilts; educ. Bishop Wordsworth’s School, Salisbury and Christ’s College, Cambridge; chairman of Fisherton House private mental hospital; racehorse owner and breeder of Shorthorn cattle.

A keen interest in local issues led Chubb to attend the auction of the Antrobus estate in 1915, which encompassed Stonehenge. On a whim, he bought Stonehenge for the sum of £6,600 as he wished to avoid the stones being acquired by an overseas buyer. Speculation suggested that he bought the stones as a present for his wife, Mary, only for her to be less than pleased with his new acquisition! Chubb gave Stonehenge to the nation on 26 October 1918 and in turn was created a baronet by Lloyd George. Sold with further background information
