ICI was founded in December 1926 by way of the merger of four companies, Brunner Mond & Co Ltd of Northwich, Cheshire, Nobel’s Explosives Co Ltd, based at Ardeer, Ayrshire, the United Alkali Co Ltd of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the British Dyestuffs Corporation of Blackley, Manchester. In 1928 the conglomerate took over the Swansea-based British Copper Manufacturers Ltd; the British Leather Cloth Manufacturing Co Ltd, better known as Rexine, of Hyde, Cheshire; the Castner-Kellner Alkali Co Ltd of Runcorn, Cheshire; Chance & Hunt, specialist chemical and rubber manufacturers, also of Runcorn; Cleghorn & Bates Ltd, ironfounders of Northwich, Cheshire; Elliott’s Metal Co Ltd, formerly Muntz’s Metal Co Ltd, of Birmingham and Swansea; and Kynoch Ltd, explosive and ammunition manufacturers at Witton, Birmingham
