James Gilhooly was born in Portobello, Midlothian, on 29 March 1889.. An Oilworker by occupation, he attested for the Cameron Highlanders on 25 February 1907. After seven years service he was discharged and was for a time employed as a Butler. Recalled for service in the Great War, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war with the Cameron Highlanders on 14 August 1914. He was posted as wounded and missing in action following the Battle of the Aisne on 14 September 1914 and was later assumed to have been killed on that day. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial. He was the son of Patrick and Margaret Ann Gilhooly of 20 Sandport Street, Leith, Edinburgh. Entitled to clasp.
