Charles Hillman was born in and enlisted at Birmingham. Serving with the 2nd Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 13 August 1914. He was killed in action on 23 October 1914. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

With original photograph of the recipient in uniform; Victory Medal forwarding slip, and a hand-written ‘memorandum’ which accompanied a Princess Mary’s Gift Tin (not in lot) which would have been issued to him in December 1914 had he lived. The tin was forwarded to his next-of-kin ‘Mr J. Hillman, 27 Stour St., Spring Hill, Birmingham’. Also with copied m.i.c. and other research.
