John Byrne was born in Hook, Co. Wexford and enlisted at New Ross, Co. Wexford. Serving in the Irish Guards, he died of wounds on 30 October 1914. He was buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. With original Parchment Certificate of Character on Discharge, dated 28 September 1905, and copied casualty details.
