Medals Related to Sports, France, Union Nationale des Sociétés de Tir de France, c.1894, a large uniface cast bronze maquette by H. Dubois [after M. Mercié] for Barbedienne, winged figure carrying naked male warrior to safety, burning town in background, 251mm (BDM I, 635). Spots of verdigris in lower right field, otherwise good very fine, rare (£90-120)

The plaster Gloria Victis! [Glory to the Vanquished], exhalting the feeling of patriotism after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1 and the work of Marius Mercié, was first exhibited in 1894 and the 3-dimensional bronze, over 2 metres in height, in 1895 (cf. Kjellberg pp.488-9)
