Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976), won his DSO at the Battle of Ypres in the First World War, which perhaps explains why the Belgian medallist Eugène-Jan de Bremaecker, who executed the reverse design in 1937, chose it for this medal
