WORLD ART MEDALS France, Léon Blum, c.1938, a uniface cast bronze plaque by G. Regnauld, bust left, 88 x 57mm (cf. BDW 13, 383). Good very fine (£30-40)

Léon Blum (1872-1950), eminent member of the Jewish community in Paris and the most important personality in the French Socialist Party in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1936 he became the first Socialist and the first Jew to serve as President of France, resigning in June 1937 but regaining office for a few short months in 1938. In 1946 he served briefly as interim premier and played a large part in establishing the Fourth Republic
