Estimate: £80–£100

BRITISH COINS Early Anglo-Saxon Period, AR Sceatta, Series 3 imitation, after c. 680, radiate bust right, tic in front with annulet before, l and annulet behind, reverse totii in beaded box, fantail above with three pellets, l to l., pi to r (partly off flan), ‘horns’ at bottom corners, 1.23 gms (M 95; S 775; EMC 1999.0109). Good very fine (£80-100)

Mike Bonser says: “the horns are the imitative give-away; they should be at the top”. Metcalf comments that there exists a wide range of imitations of Series A, some in very good silver and of acceptable weight. They tend to be found anywhere except in Kent. This coin was found at Quidenham, Norfolk.
