Thomas Payne lived at 2 Waldron Jaid, Roseeth, Harrow. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for service at Harrow on 11 December 1914, aged 34 years. Posted to the 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards, he served in France, 15 August-2 October 1915. He was wounded in action at Hill 70 - a gunshot wound to the left foot on 28 September 1915 - for which he was invalided to England and a hospital in Newcastle. Recovering from his wound, he returned to France, 19 May 1916-8 January 1919 and was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery in action on 31 July 1917 (ref. War Diary).
