Charles Thacker was born in Brownhills, Walsall, Staffordshire. A Groom by occupation, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry in January 1901, aged 24 years, 2 months. With the 106th (Staffordshire) Company Imperial Yeomanry he served in South Africa, March 1901-August 1902. He was discharged at Aldershot on 18 August 1902. Additionally entitled to the clasps ‘South Africa 1901’ and ‘South Africa 1902’.

In the Great War he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 16 August 1914 as a Gunner with the 25th Brigade R.F.A. Later awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. Clasp to 1914 Star not confirmed. Entitled to the Silver War Badge.
