James Sutherland was the son of Mackay Forbes and Elizabeth Sutherland. He was educated at Cooper’s Hill and joined the Indian Public Works Department in 1888. He volunteered for active service in August 1914 and as a Lieutenant in Royal Engineers entered the East African theatre of war in October 1914, serving there until March 1918 and afterwards in Mesopotamia until the end of the war. Attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel he was awarded the O.B.E. and D.S.O. With copied research.
