A Second World War O.B.E. group of six awarded to Chief Engineer W. Wayman, Merchant Navy, who was decorated when aged in his mid-60s

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E. (Civil) Officer’s 2nd type breast badge; British War and Mercantile Marine War Medals (William Wayman); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; War Medal 1939-45, together with ‘Loyal Service’ badge, extremely fine (7) £300-350

O.B.E. London Gazette 1 January 1942.

William Wayman, who was born in Sunderland in 1878, was awarded his O.B.E. for services as Chief Engineer of the S.S.
Lynton Grange. Whether he was still serving in her on 28 December 1942 remains unconfirmed, but if so he would have endured 11 hours in one of her boats after she was torpedoed by the U-628 in the North Atlantic; sold with copied Captain’s report on her loss.
