Sergeant M. P. ‘Pedro’ Monton completed a tour of operations as a Rear Gunner on Lancasters of No. 106 Squadron between November 1943 and August 1944. On his very first operation, attacking Gelsenkirchen, Monton opened fire on a German nightfighter which was attacking another Lancaster; the fighter was seen to break off the attack. A few nights later, on the first of his several ‘visits’ to Berlin, the starboard inner engine of his bomber was hit by A.A. fire and his pilot was compelled to abort the mission and return to base.
