Lieutenant Edward Wynne Chapman was born in 1887 and educated at Christ’s College, New Zealand. He came to England in 1909 and was attached to the 3rd Dragoon Guards the following year, becoming Second Lieutenant in May and Lieutenant in November 1911. He went to Egypt in 1912 where the regiment was stationed at Abbasiyeh, Cairo, till the war broke out. Arriving in England on 20 October 1914, he went straight to the front and was killed in action on 17 November 1914, being posthumously mentioned in Sir John French’s despatch for conspicuous bravery.
