Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea, V.R., large, bronze (George Rumsby, Wreck of the "Ashburne" on the 5th May 1894) in case of issue, edge bruising to reverse, good very fine £280-320

Awarded to Seaman George Rumsby, of the steamship Garnet, of Dundee, for 'rescuing the crew of the steamship Ashburne, of Sunderland, which was abandoned in the North Sea. The weather was stormy at the time with a heavy cross sea running and great risk was incurred. The lifeboat was lost.' (Ref. The Sea Gallantry Medal, by R. J. Scarlett). The Medal in Silver was awarded to the Mate; the Medal in Bronze with a gratuity of £2 was awarded to Rumsby and two other members of the Garnet's crew.
