James Herman Stephen Gartrell was born on 24 November 1876 and enlisted into the Royal Marine Artillery on 16 February 1895. Gartrell spent the bulk of his career afloat and during the Great War served aboard the pre-dreadnought battleship Hindustan, June 1914-February 1916 and the battleship Royal Sovereign, September 1916-March 1919. Thomas Francis Adams was born in Co. Durham on 23 September 1907. A Sheet Metal Worker by occupation he enlisted into the Royal Marines at Birmingham on 5 February 1925. During the war years, he served at
Malabar (shore base at Bermuda and Jamaica), March 1939-November 1943; at Chatham, December 1943-March 1944 and at Orlando (shore base at Glasgow), March 1944-June 1945, being advanced to Corporal in January 1944. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. on 7 June 1946. With copied service paper.
