Private Woolf Schneider, as recorded in the British Jewry Book of Honour, was a member of the 39th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (Judeans), which was part of the Jewish Legion. The 39th Battalion was raised in April 1918 and was nicknamed the “American” Battalion as most of the soldiers came from America, Canada and some from Argentina. The Commanding Officer of the 39th Battalion was Colonel Eliazar Lazar Margolin who won a D.S.O. in the Australian Army but who resigned from the Australian Army to take command of the 39th. The Battalion fought at the Battle of Megiddo and the crossing of the River Jordan. The Commander in Chief in his Dispatches after the Battles wrote, ‘I would bring to notice the good fighting qualities shown by the newer units- these include the 38th and 39th (Jewish) Battalions.
