South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Condr. H. Marshall, Commissariat.) good very fine £400-450

Henry Marshall was born in the Parish of St. George, London. He enlisted as a Boy in the 35th Regiment at Chatham on 13 August 1857, aged 14 years, 1 month. Appointed a Drummer in June 1858. Imprisoned by the Civil Power for theft, August-September 1859. Transferred to the 69th Regiment in October 1863, transferred to the Commissary Staff Corps in July 1866 and transferred to the Army Service Corps in April 1870. Served in India, January 1860-May 1864; South Africa, May 1874-February 1880 and Egypt, October 1884-January 1887. Appointed a 2nd Class Sergeant in 1878 and promoted to Conductor of Supplies upon creation of that rank and transferred to the Commissariat and Transport Staff in 1879. For his services he was awarded the South Africa Medal with clasp for ‘1879’ and the Egypt Medal with the clasp for ‘The Nile 1884-85’ together with the Khedive’s Star. Conductor Marshall retired in November 1888 after 31 years service. He was still alive in 1927. With copied service papers.
