The M.G.S. awarded to Josiah Partington, 48th Foot, wounded at Albuhera and Nivelle

Josiah Partington was born in Middleton, Lancashire c.1789. He entered the 48th Foot in September 1803 and entered Portugal in June 1809, seeing his first major action at Talavera on 27/28 July 1809, the 48th taking a prominent part. He was promoted to Corporal in March 1810. On 16 May 1811 he fought at the battle of Albuhera, the 2/48th suffering 422 men killed or wounded - Partington being wounded in both legs. The remaining fit men were transferred to the 1/48th and a cadre, including Partington, returned home to recruit replacements. In July 1813 he was back in action in the Peninsula and in September was promoted to Serjeant. Was wounded in the hand at the battle of Nivelle, 10 November 1813. Partington was discharged on 3 November 1814. Latterly employed as a Silk Weaver in Middleton, Lancashire, Partington died in June 1872. With a quantity of copied research.
