Henry VI (First reign, 1422-1461), Penny, Dublin, crowned bust facing, star to right of neck, [h]enricvs dns [hibnie], rev. cross and pellets, civitas dvblinie, 0.63g/12h (Finn, SNC 1996, p.333, same dies; S 6270; DF 75). Chipped, fine or better, excessively rare £1,200-1,500

The only issue of Irish coins between 1340 and 1460. Coinage at Dublin was authorised by an Ordinance of 1425 and a moneyer was appointed the following year. The extreme rarity of the issue suggests that it was short-lived and indeed there are only three other specimens known (BM, ex J.W. Martin; Fitzwilliam Museum, ex J.S. Henderson, 1933; private collection, England, 1996, formerly owned by S.R. Critchley and found near Ancaster, Lincolnshire)
