Medals Related to Navigation, Germany, Admiral Reinhard von Scheer, 1916, a cast bronze medal by H. Kaufmann for Ball, bust left, reverse battleship with guns firing a salvo, 92mm (Frankenhuis 793; cf. DNW 39, 561). Very fine (£50-70)

Reinhard von Scheer (1863-1928), chief admiral of the German navy, was the architect behind the important naval engagement between the British and German fleets in the Skaggerak on 31 May 1916 (aka the Battle of Jutland), when over 8,600 lives were lost
