WORLD HISTORICAL MEDALS India, Jorhat Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition, 1908, engraved silver prize medals to W. S. Withers (2) for Ginger & Tumeric, 51mm, and Tobacco Leaf, 46mm, both with broad rims and rings and loops for suspension (Puddester — ). Better than very fine but polished in the past and showing hairlines on close inspection (£70-80)

Jorhat is in north eastern India, not far from the border with Burma. Most Indian exhibition medals were struck from dies, presumably in this case the size of the Exhibition did not justify the expense involved and the production of the prize medals left to an Indian, and possibly local, silversmith. Of charming, though somewhat naive style.
