Sir Josiah John Guest, 1st Viscount Wimborne, FRS, FRGS (1785-1852), Canford Magna, Dorset, and Dowlais, South Wales; son of Thomas Guest, manager and co-proprietor of the Dowlais Ironworks; succeeded to a share of the business on the death of his father in 1807 and proceeded to make his fortune while cementing a reputation as a philanthropist; MP for Honiton, Devon, 1826-31; after the Reforms of 1831 he became the first MP for Merthyr Tydfil, 1832, holding the seat until his death. Among his other interests, he was chairman of the Taff Vale Railway. Further details sold with the lot, including a copy of his obituary from The Times, 9 Dec. 1852
