When Anguilla separated from the associated state of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla and petitioned the UK government to revert to Crown Colony status in July 1967, the Anguilla Charter Co, founded by Dr Gerald Feigen, Howard Gossage and Scott Newhall, the latter then editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, purchased 10,000 silver dollar-sized coins and had them countermarked on a hydraulic press in the basement of the Chronicle’s offices and sold them as a fund raising scheme. In addition to the silver coins Newhall counterstamped two Mexican 50 pesos, one of which he gave to Sir Frederick Phillips, the other he gave to his secretary. Sold with further detail
