Assistant Paymaster William Hogg Wolseley Markham first entered the service as Assistant Clerk in March 1869, rising to the rank of Clerk 10 March 1870 and Assistant Paymaster 21 March 1873. In this rank he was present aboard H.M.S. Penelope at the bombardment of Alexandria on 11 July 1882.
