Charles John Ismay French Hopegood was born on 15 July 1897, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Essex Regiment on 15 September 1915. He served in France and Belgium from July to October 1916, and from May to November 1917, being twice wounded in action. He became Captain in May 1927, whilst employed with the King’s African Rifles from October 1926 to November 1928. He served on the North West Frontier of India in 1930-31 and was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 6 May 1932. Promoted to Major in August 1938, he served with his regiment in Palestine and during the Second World War.
