Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, Marine Medal, bronze, with silver second service bar, dated ‘28th April 1911 (Michael Maguire (aged 12) for rescuing a child from the canal locks at Great Howard St., 5 July 1903) suspension a little slack, otherwise nearly very fine £100-140

Michael Maguire, aged 12 and John Joyce, aged 11, were each awarded the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Medal, in bronze, 10 shillings and a new suit of clothes ‘ for a most gallant rescue of a child who had fallen into the canal lock at Great Howard Street, Liverpool on 5 July 1903. There was 15 feet of water in the lock at the time, and the boys had difficulty in getting the child up the lock ladder onto dry land.’

P.C. Samuel Charles Wellings was awarded the Society’s Medal, in silver and Michael Maguire the silver clasp to his medal and 30 shillings ‘ for rescuing a man who attempted suicide by jumping into the River Mersey from the S.S.
Virginian on 28 April 1911.’
