China 1900, no clasp (Carpr. F. Stears, R.N., H.M.S. Goliath) nearly extremely fine 760 no clasp medals issued to this ship. £120-140

Frederick Stears was born on 31 July 1860 and entered the Royal Navy as Acting Carpenter on 21 June 1887. He served aboard Goliath on the China station from March 1900 until 1903, and in October of that year was commended for ‘ingenuity displayed in designing a submersible target’. He was promoted to Chief Carpenter in September 1905 and shortly afterwards transferred to the Hong Kong Dock Yard, where he remained for two years. Throughout his service he was always highly commended for his work and ability, and was made Lieutenant in May 1915. He appears to have served in the U.K. during the war as a Barrack Master. Sold with copy service papers.
