Distinguished Service Medal, G.V.R. (ST478 J. D. Phillips, Trimr., R.N.R., H.M.S. Dalhousie, Mesopotamia 1916) nearly extremely fine £180-220

D.S.M. London Gazette 11 August 1917, with photocopy of original recommendation, signed by Vice Admiral Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, Commander in Chief East Indies Station ‘I am of the opinion that the crews of motor lighters are deserving of recognition. In view of the fact that most of these men are now being relieved of their arduous services by natives and their craft being turned over to the military it is considered that now is a suitable time to make awards. It is pointed out that men in motor lighters had a very arduous time during the summer of 1916 in the course of which 10 died and 48 were invalided.’ (The total number of men serving in motor lighters was 120 and four awards of the DSM were granted).
