When the advance was held up by machine-gun fire this officer collected some men and led them forward, establishing a post in a wood. During the day his position was subjected to an intense bombardment causing a number of casualties, but he kept his party well in hand, pushed forward and hung on until relieved. His leadership and initiative were an example to all.’
