Second Lieutenant Philip Louis Samuel Green was killed in action France and Flanders 18 September 1916 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

The Times, 2 November 1916 ‘Second Lieutenant P.L.S.Green was killed leading his men on September 18th. He was the elder son of Alderman W.S.Green and Mrs Green of St Albans, and was educated at St Albans School and in Switzerland. When war broke out he put himself in training and at the close of 1914 joined the Inns of Court O.T.C.. He received his commission in the West Yorks. in May 1915. His C.O. writes ‘He was a great loss to us as he was a very painstaking and a brave officer with a wonderful devotion to duty’.
