Able Seaman Alexander Gillespie Wardlow was killed in action aboard the Q-Ship H.M.S. Paxton (aka Lady Patricia and Q.25) on 20 May 1917, when she was torpedoed in the Atlantic by the U.46. His Captain and Engineer Officer were taken P.O.W. by the U-Boat and a number of other survivors were rescued by a trawler, steamer and an American destroyer [NB. The Great War casualty roll spells his surname as ‘Wardlaw’ and gives his final rank as Ordinary Telegraphist].
