1914-15 Star (

Second Lieutenant Alan Noel Cam was born in 1894, the son of the Rev. W. H. Cam, and educated at the Dragon School and Dover College. He originally enlisted into a special Engineering Company instigated at the behest of Winston Churchill, its purpose being to serve alongside the newly created Royal Naval Division. Consequently sent out to the Dardenelles and Cape Helles, Cam was eventually invalided home, spending several months in hospital at Haslar. Later commissioned into the Royal Engineers, he was twice wounded, the first time in the Battle of Messines. Then, on 16 August 1917, while leading his men forward on the Ypres-Menin road, Cam was cut down by machine-gun fire. A Corporal and Sapper from his Company later recovered his wrist watch and revolver, both of which were returned to his family.
