A rare Abu Klea pair to Sergeant F. Wade, Royal Highlanders, together with related family medals
Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, 3 clasps, El-Teb-Tamaai, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (980 Pte., 1/Rl. Highrs.) contact wear from star; Khedive’s Star 1884, reverse engraved on each point (980 Cpl. F.W., B.W.) together with four original documents, comprising, handwritten instruction to Corporal Wade ordering him to transport a prisoner to A.A.G., Debbah, dated 6 May 1885, this piece torn; handwritten letter of reference from Captain Heath, dated 20 December 1889, commending Wade for his services as a Military Clerk whilst based in Malta; Parchment Certificate of Character on discharge, dated 10 September 1890; Parchment Certificate of Discharge, dated 10 September 1890. Together with: Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1790 Sergt. Geo. Wade, 1st Bde. R.A.) and Great War pair (201480 Pte G. Wade, W.Rid.R.) generally very fine or better (5) £450-550

Confirmed on the roll for Abu Klea. A small detachment of only 1 officer and 22 men of the Royal Highlanders were present at Abu Klea in the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment.

Sergeant Frank Wade was born sometime in1862 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He enlisted into the Royal Highlanders in January 1882 at Halifax, Yorkshire, England at the age of 19 his trade being given as ‘Tinner’. He saw overseas service in Egypt, Malta and Gibraltar before his discharge in September 1890 on having been found medically unfit for further service. (With 6 photocopied pages of service papers).

Sergeant George Wade was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England sometime in 1824. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery in August 1847 at Huddersfield, Yorkshire his trade being given as ‘Engineer’. He saw overseas service in Canada and Gibraltar before being discharged at his own request after 21 years service. (With 4 photocopied pages of service papers).
