William Thomas Bowen joined the Indian Army in June 1844. He served in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1844-45, including the capture of the forts of Punalla and Powunghur. He served in the Land Transport Corps in the Persian Expeditionary Field Force, including the bombardment and capture of Mohumra (Medal with clasp). He subsequently served in the Abyssinian Expedition in 1867-68 in the 3rd Bombay Native Infantry. Bowen retired with the rank of Major General in October 1876.
