Sergeant John Bown was killed in action at the battle of Ferozeshuhur on 21 December, 1845, and was the most senior NCO of the regiment killed that day. The 9th Regiment suffered most severely at Ferozeshuhur, having 81 officers and men killed. Along with the 62nd Regiment who had 94 killed, these were the worst battle casualties suffered by any regiments during the first Sikh wars.
