An important Regimental Medal of the Merton Volunteers, obverse, soldier standing between two rifles, merton volunteers around within wreath, reverse, inscribed ‘Presented by Horatio, Lord Nelson to Capt. Richard Howard for his Good Services to the Corps, 1804’, 51 mm, fitted with integral loop for suspension, very fine and a very rare award with this Nelson association £1000-1200

Ex Sotheby 26 November, 1980 (Lot 229 - realised £1100).

Merton Place, Surrey, was the house occupied by Nelson and Emma, Lady Hamilton, from 1801 and it was from there that Nelson left to join the Fleet before the battle of Trafalgar.
