Richard Keen was born in London circa 1799 and entered the navy as an A.B. aboard Boadicea on 15 February, 1825. He remained aboard this ship throughout the war in Burma, receiving promotion to Captain of the Forecastle in March 1825, and to Quarter Master in June 1826. He left Boadicea in August 1826 for Warspite, in which ship he served until December 1826 when he was discharged to the Elizabeth packet for passage back to England.
