Army of India 1799-1826, 4 clasps, Asseerghur, Argaum, Gawilghur, Ava (Lieut. Coll. John Woulfe, 3rd Lt. Infy.) short hyphen reverse, impressed naming, good very fine and very rare £5000-7000

Ex Lawson Whalley Collection 1884, Hyde Greg Collection 1887, and Whittaker Collection 1890. Only 23 medals were issued with four clasps, just two with this combination. Approximately 48 clasps were issued for Asseerghur.

John Woulfe was appointed a Cadet on the Madras Establishment, and arrived in India in 1799. He was immediately promoted to a Lieutenantcy in the 11th Regiment, his commission dated 7 August 1799; Captain-Lieutenant 11 October 1804, and Captain of a Company 27 June 1805; Major by brevet 4 June 1814, and regimentally 19 June 1817. He served with the 1st Battalion, 11th Regiment in the Hyderabad subsidiary force during the whole war against the Mahratta chieftains, from the beginning of 1803, until the middle of 1806, and was present at the sieges of Asseerghur, Gawilghur, and Julnah; and in the battle of Argaum, besides on several affairs of less importance. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in 1824, and served with the 3rd Light Infantry during the war in Burma. Woulfe became Lieutenant-General in 1851 but died the same year at Cheltenham.
