Frederick Allan Whitear was born in Teignmouth, Devon, on 18 September 1886. A Grocer’s Assistant by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 25 July 1906, being ranked as a Provisional Sick Berth Attendant at Vivid I. He was confirmed in that rank in February 1907 when based at Plymouth Hospital. He was promoted to Sick Berth Steward 2nd Class in April 1913 when on Calypso. On the outbreak of war, Whitear was stationed at Plymouth Hospital, August-October 1914. He was then at Vivid I, October 1914-April 1916, and Plymouth Hospital, April-June 1916. From June 1916 until March 1920 he served aboard the battlecruiser Lion, being promoted to Sick Berth Steward in January 1919. After which, he served on the battlecruiser Hood, April 1920-May 1923, being promoted to Sick Berth Petty Officer in August 1920. Whitear attained the rank of Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer in May 1925 when on the battleship Emperor of India. With copied service paper.
