Thomas Clarance Tomlinson was born on 26 July 1888 at Edmonton, Essex. A Commercial Traveller by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marine Artillery at Southampton on 25 July 1906. He was appointed a Gunner in May 1907 and served until September 1910 when he entered the R.F.R. At the same time he became a Constable in the City of London Police Force. Tomlinson resigned from the Police Force in April 1913, intending to join his father, farming at Medstead, Hampshire. As a member of the R.F.R. Tomlinson was mobilised in August 1914. He served during September 1914-August 1918 aboard the battlecruiser New Zealand, being present at the battle of Dogger Bank, 24 January 1915 and Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was demobilised on 3 April 1919. With copied R.M.A. service paper and a number of papers relating to his service with the City of London Police.
