Walter Sabin was born in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, on 23 October 1885. He enlisted in to the Royal Marine Artillery at Nottingham on 21 September 1904. He was appointed a Gunner 2nd Class in May 1905 and a Gunner in August 1905. He served on the armoured cruiser Defence, September 1913-September 1914, the battlecruisers, Indefatigable, September 1914-February 1915, and Inflexible, February-March 1915, and then the pre-dreadnought battleship Lord Nelson, May 1915-June 1917. Sabin was awarded the Long Service Medal in December 1919 when on Ramillies. Discharged in 1925, his address was given as ‘18 Milton Street, Long Eaton, Derbyshire’. With copied service papers.
