Walter Vivian Coleman was born on 3 August 1895, at Wellington, Nilgiria, S. India. He entered the Royal Marines as a Bugler on 28 January 1910 and was ranked as a Private in March 1913. He entered the war serving on the depot ship Blenheim, April 1914-April 1916, seeing service in the Mediterranean. He was then posted to the battleship Royal Oak, May 1916-November 1918, and was present on the ship at the Battle of Jutland, 30 May 1916. Coleman was promoted to Sergeant in December 1919 and Quartermaster Sergeant in June 1928. With copied service papers.
