Five: Private J. Elliott, 18th, late 3rd Hussars

John Elliott was born in Durham. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the Durham Artillery, he attested for the 3rd Hussars under the alias of ‘John Ellis’. With the regiment he served in Egypt, June-November 1898, India, November 1898-December 1901, and South Africa, December 1901-October 1902. He was transferred to the 18th Hussars in October 1903 and was discharged on 30 November 1910. With the onset of war, Elliott, then employed as a Commissionaire, attested for the Hussars at Newcastle-on-Tyne, on 19 August 1914, aged 41 years, 3 months. Serving with the 18th Hussars, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 6 October 1914 and remained there until 8 March 1916. After a period of home service at the Reserve Cavalry Depot, he returned to France, serving there, 28 June 1916-10 March 1918. Returning then to England, he was posted to the 5th Cavalry Depot. Private Elliott was discharged as ‘no longer physically fit for war service’ on 27 April 1918. John Elliott died on 31 October 1949.
