Walter Haddock was born in Hanwell, Staines, Middlesex. A Coachbuilder by occupation, he attested for the 19th Hussars on 16 April 1889, aged 19 years. With the regiment he served in India, January 1892-January 1897. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1897. Recalled to the Colours, he was posted to South Africa, December 1899-May 1902. Haddock was one of only 10 men of the regiment to be awarded the above Q.S.A. clasp combination. He was discharged, having completed his period of engagement, on 26 May 1902. With copied birth certificate, service papers and roll extracts.
