Thomas Jones was born in Catford, Kent. A Baker by occupation, he attested for the Corps of Hussars at Woolwich on 1 October 1894, aged 18 years, 11 months. Posted to the 19th Hussars, he served in India, September 1895-October 1899 and in South Africa, October 1899-October 1902. Returning home, he was transferred to the Army Reserve on 5 November 1902 and was discharged on 30 September 1906. With copied service papers.
