Ernest Williams was born in Bishop’s Castle, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire. A Butler by occupation, he attested for the Coldstream Guards at Cheltenham on 5 July 1898, aged 24 years, 1 month. With the Guards he served in South Africa, October 1899-July 1902. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with seven clasps and King’s medal with two. In July 1902 he was transferred to the Army Reserve and was discharged on 4 July 1910. With copied service papers.
