John Watson was born in Ashton-in-Makersfield, near Wigan, Lancashire. A Builder/Joiner by occupation, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Ashton-in-Makerfield, on 29 January 1901, aged 21 years, 1 month. Serving with the 2nd Battalion 32nd (Lancashire) Company Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, March 1901-August 1902. Watson was discharged at Aldershot on 3 September 1902. With copied service papers.
