Indian States, Jummoo and Kashmir, War Medal 1863, 39mm., silver, with a short length of cord, contact marks, edge bruising, nearly very fine, scarce £60-80

Awarded to officers and men of the Kashmiri force under Colonel Hoshiara (or Hushyarji) for the punitive expedition against the neighbouring tributary territory of Yasin, 1863-64. The Yasinis were defeated and their strong points taken. The inscription on the medal obverse translates, ‘Medal for bravery at the taking of the Fort of Mandauri’; that on the reverse translates, ‘The country of Yasin, 1,920 Samvat’ (= 1863 A.D.). Ref.
